How to Care for an Automatic Watch
How to Care for an Automatic Watch is a question that many people ask, that’s the theme of this post. I looked at some of the advantages of wearing an automatic watch in the last post here Owning an Automatic Watch. Here, I’ll give you some tips on caring for an automatic watch.
We have become so used to quartz watches such as the ever popular Casio watches etc. However, with the recent technological advances in automatic watches and as they are coming back into favour with more and more people, it can seem a little strange to make the change away from battery power. So often people are a little bewildered by them and believe there must be some special method of how to care for an automatic watch. In actual fact, they are not so different on the surface from a battery powered watch.
So with that in mind, all you really need to be aware of is the fact that you can’t take an automatic watch off and leave it off for too many extended periods, or it will wind itself down and stop. That doesn’t mean you have to wear it in bed, as it will happily keep going for far longer than you will normally sleep overnight. Not such a disaster, as simply by putting it back on your wrist and gently shaking several times will restart it. Your only hassle will be resetting the time.
So when it comers down to knowing how to care for an automatic watch, the basic thing to keep in mind is to make sure you wear it every day and just move normally. The gentle natural movement of your arm and wrist when you walk or do anything is enough to keep it sufficiently wound so that it’ll run overnight and be ready for you in the morning.
Other points of care are to keep it dry as much as possible, as even water resistant watches can eventually take in some moisture if exposed to enough of it. Keep the watch clean for aesthetic reasons and be careful not to scratch the glass.
Other than that, you don’t need to do much at all to keep it in pristine condition as long as you don’t wear it on a building site or similar!
